Day 2 - Mosaics

Tuesday - "Of the Muses"
Tuesday brought us to the Chicago Mosaic School were the students spent the morning drawing, planning, and practicing designs to bring to life in mosaic tiles.  The instructors explained the history of mosaics, which date back thousands of years, and showed examples of methods and designs as well as concepts of texture, contrast, and line.  The students were then set free to explore their own imaginations and ideas.  They created representational and abstract art which they brought to life in beautiful color.

Days 4 & 5 - Lill Street (continued)

Time for Art The groups of students who were not throwing and molding terra cotta were creating clocks with brass and copper in a day-long metalsmithing workshop.  First, the students learned about safety and how to use the tools that would be needed.  Then, they sketched out their own original designs to create their timely works of art.  In the design process, students considered positive and negative space, textures, contrasts, patinas, and forms.  To bring their visions to life, students cut the metal and added detail with rivets, hammers, interior cuts, and finishes.

Day 1 - Art Institute and Loop Interior Architecture

A snowy morning We started our Agora week with a trip to the Art Institute.  The students selected a docent-led tour of Asian art where we saw ancient ceramics, screens, metalwork, and wood block prints as well as contemporary calligraphy and modern art installations. Lunch Lunch was scheduled to be eaten al fresco in Millennium Park.  The 30 degree temperature and snow did not cooperate with our plans, however.  "The best laid plans of mice and men...."  The students enjoyed lunch at the Art Institute and prepared to explore some interior architecture in the Loop with Chicago Detours.  A snowier afternoon The students spirits remained warm, though the mercury continued to drop.  Guides from Chicago Detours led us to see public art installations in the Loop and we travelled through the pedway under the city to learn about the history of Chicago architecture and differences in materials, style, form, and function.  We visited and explored the in

Days 4 & 5 - Lill Street

Creativity in the round Days four and five saw our group split into two sections to explore different media at Lill Street Art Center.  The students spent an entire day with terra cotta, learning the skills of wheelthrowing, handbuilding, and glazing, and they each produced several pieces that showcase their growth and development over the course of the day.
